Beginning in January, we will be making Fidget Quilts for patients with Alzheimer's who receive daytime care through the Friendship Center. Director Luciana Mitzkun tells us that many patients with dementia suffer from anxiety and agitation, and the Fidget Quilts can help to calm them by keeping them engaged and occupied.

Pictorial fabrics in the Fidget Quilts can serve as memory joggers and conversation starters, while their hands are kept busy with the different tactile elements. These can include: fringe, velcro, zippers, buckles, buttons, pockets, rings, beads, shoe laces, lace, loops, tulle and any three-dimensional techniques.

So dig deep into your sewing supplies for ingredients not usually used in quilt-making and get ready to try something different.
